In 2007 I led the preparation of Kerrier District Council's winning bid to the Big Lottery for the Heartlands scheme, designing, editing and writing the document. Heartlands won £22 million at the end of 2007 and was the only project in England to do so. The win was based a mix of thoughtful analysis of the Lottery criteria, extensive local consultation, a good scheme and effective presentation. We re-started the project in January 2008 and one of the inception workshops is shown on the next page. Cornwall Council has replaced all of the district councils in Cornwall and they are now the client.
I have undertaken a number of development roles on the project offering strategic, creative, operational, legal and business advice. These roles are covered under one title Interim Director and this appointment continues through until 2011, when the scheme will open to the public.
The 7.5 hectare site will be a mixed use development, centred around the former tin mine, Robinson's Shaft, comprising:
- The regeneration of the former mine workings
- A visitor centre
- Housing
- Park and open space
- Retail and other commercial units
- Studios and making spaces for sculpture
- Performance spaces
- A new heart for Pool village
The development has been designed to be low carbon.
My company is also designing the exhibition for the World Heritage Site visitor centre.
